“Why is this a global competition to you when Americans are losing their lives every day?”,“People are losing their lives every day globally. Ask China.”
China made the virus in a lab. WHO was irresponsible and lacking to contain the virus during its initial spread. China allowed travel even though the virus was spreading.
It is basic human behavior to look for the cause in every situation; more so when the effect is not desirable. So, when countries started blaming China for the global situation or when Indian citizens wanted to boycott Chinese products, nobody was surprised. “Make in India” got its resurgence. But what happens when a superpower; one that has the ability to influence millions of mindsets, impressionable or not, is hell-bent on playing the blame-game? Especially when this rally has no effective result.
The number of COVID-19 cases took a sharp turn for the worse in April in the United States. Many were concerned with Trump’s lack of action, and today, the United States has become the worst affected country in the world with the highest number of cases (but not the highest fatality rate).
While the world is awaiting the vaccine to finally evict this virus, on the 15th of April, the Republican administration announced their decision to suspend any funding towards the WHO; financing which is worth more than half a billion dollars. Trump’s reasoning lies within the fact that the WHO was “severely mismanaging and covering up the outbreak.”
Here’s the problem with everything Trump's administration is putting its efforts into. Instead of effectively trying to curb the virus’s spread, they denied its influence which led to thousands of people losing their lives. Cutting off funding for the WHO during a pandemic does not help their situation. It seems like a reward-punishment scheme that Trump has set up, and the people getting punished are those who can help us get out of this situation. What happens to the countries that were relying on money from the WHO to fight COVID-19. What happens to progress in preparing the vaccine that would undoubtedly require money?
It is time that governments realize that they hold the lives of billions of people in their hands. Blaming the WHO or China leads us absolutely nowhere. In the hunt for a solution, the blame-game is the Tom Riddle to Prof. Slughorn; it may seem alright and innocent at first, but the harm it will do is unfathomable.
The question we need to ask ourselves is, Who does this game harm the most? The United States, its allies in the political world, China, WHO? And since there is no inherent benefit to this blame game, as seen in previous cases as well (the United States has often cut off funding to UN agencies which have led to no good), what are the real results being Trump's adamant bashing of the WHO and China? Could it be because he doesn’t want any of his decisions ruining his chances for re-election? If so, what exactly is assigning blame doing?
